Welcome to Appalachian! We look forward to working with you on your graduate program. Please carefully read and retain both your admission letter and the insert, as they contain important information about your graduate education.
Academic Requirements: Review the academic regulations and requirements in the Graduate Bulletin, along with the section containing the requirements for your program. Responsibility for meeting requirements rests solely with you.
Code of Student Conduct: By applying for admission to graduate school and accepting your offer of admission, you are agreeing to abide by the Honor Code and Code of Student Conduct. If you have additional questions, you may contact the Office of Student Conduct.
Email and Student ID (App Card): Once you confirm your attendance, you will receive an email with information about your appstate.edu email and login. You may begin using Appalnet once your account is activated. It is important to note we do not start processing new summer/fall admits until mid-March. Your email information will arrive in two to four weeks.
Academic Calendar and Registration: You will receive information from your program regarding registering for courses using the Appalnet system. Registration periods vary each term; however, we have an open registration period the week before classes begin. You can find a full schedule for the term, including registration periods, class meetings, holidays, and final exams, on the Registrar's website.
Tuition and Fees: Once you register, your tuition and fees will be calculated and a charge will be posted to your student account – notification is sent via appstate.edu email. You can check your student account any time through Appalnet. For more information on tuition and fees, visit Student Accounts.
Housing: If you are moving to Boone to attend classes, you will need to arrange for off campus housing as soon as possible. Please visit our off campus housing resource and database to begin searching for your new home. Local newspapers are an additional resource to assist you with off campus housing.
Student Health Insurance Requirement:
The UNC System requires that eligible students must have health insurance. This includes graduate students.
Health Insurance is required for all graduate studies students who meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) credit hours per semester, AND
- Enrolled in a degree-seeking program, AND
- Eligible to pay the University Student Health Fee
Information on completing health and immunization forms is available through student Health Services. Paper copies are not accepted, all documents must be submitted using MedPortal. You may visit Health Services for more details instructions.
Requesting Accommodation for a Disability: If you have a disability and may need reasonable accommodations (alternate testing, readers, scribes, etc.) in order to have equal access to the University's courses, programs, and activities, please contact the Office of Disability Services as soon as possible. Accommodations are not made retroactively.
Delaying Registration or Changing Your Term of Admission: If you need to postpone your enrollment, please let both the Graduate School and your program know as soon as possible. If you do not register or request a deferral through the Graduate School during the first 10 days of classes, your admission will be canceled, requiring that you start the application process again if you decide to attend in the future.
Orientation: On-campus students are strongly encouraged to attend a graduate school orientation session, held in the Plemmons Student Union. Orientation sessions are held each August and January. Off-campus and distance education students are also welcome to those on-campus sessions. However, the Distance Education staff organizes site-based or online orientation specific for each cohort. Financial Aid: If you intend to enroll in 5 or more hours you may be eligible to receive federal aid (unsubsidized loans) to assist with funding your education. You must submit the FAFSA and accept your offer of admission to be considered. Please see The Office of Financial Aid for more information.
NC Residency for Tuition Purposes: Once you accept your offer of admission, a preliminary review of your application for NC residency will be made by the Graduate School. Finalizing NC residency may require you to submit additional information to the Registrar's Office. You will receive an email notification from the Graduate School if that is the case.
