Combating Imposter Syndrome - December 3, 2024
What is imposter syndrome? It can be defined as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success. 'Imposters' suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of their competence. Everyone can feel like an imposter at some point regardless of years of experience, education level, age, professional accomplishments, etc. and it is not uncommon to see it in graduate students.
What you don't want is for imposter syndrome to be sabotaging your graduate school experience or your job search!
You can certainly learn to identify it, manage it and take ownership of your accomplishments without feeling like a fraud. We will learn to identify signs of imposter syndrome and discuss strategies to combat it.
