Overview of Position:
University College is seeking a teaching assistant for the 2025-2026 academic year for the Professional Studies degree program. Professional Studies is a multidisciplinary degree designed to allow students to maximize their credits and create a pathway toward a bachelor's of science degree based on their interests and goals. Professional Studies is the only degree program in University College. This role will work closely and collaboratively with the director of the Professional Studies program.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the director with teaching load (three sections of UCO 2200 "Foundations of Professional Studies", approximately 60 students total, and UCO 4900 "Capstone Internship", approximately 15 students).
  • Provide feedback and grade homework, reflections, forums, quizzes, and other assignments as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with the director and enrolled students.

About the Courses:
UCO 2200 "Foundations of Professional Studies" (online, asynchronous) For Professional Studies majors, using selected readings, discussion and lectures this course will: prepare students to develop their program of study and choose their appropriate minor(s); familiarize students with the resources available to them at Appalachian; and will help develop skills important for career readiness. Prerequisites: UCO 1200 (unless exempt), RC 1000 or its equivalent.

UCO 4900 "Capstone Internship" (online, asynchronous) For Professional Studies majors, a capstone experience in a commercial, industrial or government setting. Students will keep a journal of their internship experience and will submit a written reflective paper describing their internship experience. This reflective paper will also draw upon their previous academic and professional experiences and connect these experiences to their future goals. Students will also write a cover letter and a current resume/CV. Prerequisites: senior standing, completion of a WID class.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time graduate student at Appalachian State University
  • Enrolled in a graduate program (i.e. degree-seeking)
  • Performing academically to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Ability to work 10 to 20 hours per week to fulfill position responsibilities

Start Date: August 18th, 2025

Assistantship Package Includes/Compensation:
10-20 hours per week during the academic year (August-May)
$10k stipend for the 2025-2026 academic year (August-May)
