The Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program (SDAP) has several 10-hour graduate assistantships available Fall/Spring 2024-25. Please contact hedgessh@appstate.edu with a statement of interest, resume, and the contact info for 2 recent references.

SDAP is a university program that provides an inclusive post-secondary education transition program for students 18-25 with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) who would not otherwise be qualified to attend university. The GAs help us support the SDAP students as they adjust to campus and community life at Appalachian.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing academic and life skill support
  • Communication with student volunteers, supports, and professors
  • Facilitating Person-Centered Planning (PCP) through weekly 1:1 meetings with SDAP students.
  • Participating in SDAP Team meetings
  • Some administrative tasks

This position provides opportunities to develop leadership, collaboration, communication, organizational, administrative, and other skills. This position provides experience in developing skills needed for helping professions such as Social Work, Special Education, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Mental Health, School Counseling, Communication Sciences, Nursing, etc. Experience working with individuals with IDD or other disabilities is helpful.
