This Graduate Assistant (GA) position for the James Center for Student Success & Advising works towards the mission to recruit, advise, provide professional development, and retain teacher education majors during their tenure at Appalachian State to ensure success for a career in education. The James Center staff members are collectively responsible for programs and services that foster community, student success, and inclusive excellence. This is a 9 month position requiring 20 hours per week in the James Center for Student Success and Advising. The Graduate Assistant is primarily responsible for supporting student engagement, programming, data collection, and the support of residential learning communities (RLCs) as well as student events and programs sponsored by the James Center for Student Success & Advising.
Responsibilities
- Administration and Communication
- Meet weekly with supervisor
- Maintain record of program requirements and student database
- Student Engagement
- Support Appalachian Community of Educators (ACES) and Teaching Fellows (TF) students through direct events
- Supervise Appalachian Educator's Club committees for engagement opportunities
- Assist ACES and TF Program Coordinators in developing programs, events, and activities
- Attend Open House and other James Center events as needed
Internal and External Communications
- Develop and maintain social media for the ACES program
- Draft weekly newsletters for ACES and TF students
- Support App Ed Club in student communication
General
- Provide supervision and coverage of James Center student space as necessary
- Keep regular schedule of 20 office hours per week
- Maintain flexibility with work schedule (including day, evening, and weekend events based around class schedule)
- Engage in team and staff meetings as appropriate

Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain a record of program requirements for both the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars and Teaching Fellows students
- Assist with data collection and recording
- Compose and distribute a semi-annual newsletter featuring updates about both the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars and Teaching Fellows residential learning communities
- Supervise the Appalachian Educators Club Outreach Committee in planning, scheduling, and recruiting for outreach visits
- Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate outreach visits for K-12 students and develop programming for these events (i.e. science demonstrations, Q & A panels, etc.)
- Develop and implement plans to market programs to the campus community
- Assist with developing programs, events, and activities for the Appalachian
- Community of Education Scholars and Teaching Fellows students
- Support James Center events as needed
- Provide staff coverage/supervision of the student lounge help desk as needed
- Keep a regular schedule of 20 office hours per week
- Meet with designated supervisor on a bi-weekly basis
- Maintain flexibility with work schedule (including during the day, evenings, and weekends, around class schedule)
Marginal Job Functions:
- Attend and participate in all team and staff meetings, training sessions, and division-wide meetings and programs
- Maintain James Center office and keep work areas neat and orderly
- Occasionally attend and participate in student organization meetings, residential hall meetings, etc. to promote collaborative programs
- Attend, participate, and/or work functions as needed
- Continually communicate with the Director about projects, events, responsibilities, and concerns
- Ask for help when needed
- Foster strong relationships and serve as a liaison with Reich College of
- Education administration, faculty and staff, and students
- Act as a resource for all staff and students in regards to university questions and referrals
Qualifications:
- Must be an Appalachian State student pursuing a graduate or terminal degree, preferably in the Reich College of Education.
- Must have obtained a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited university.
- Must be detail-oriented and able to accurately track data using Google Workspace tools.
- Must be positive, organized, helpful, student-centered, and responsible
- Must demonstrate a sense of job responsibility, initiative, energy, leadership, approachability, and maturity as well as a commitment to inclusive practice
- Must have availability to participate in student programming and have a presence in the James Center during open hours.
