DESCRIPTION
Graduate Assistant (GA) Position – Student Affairs Administration Program
Supervisor: Dr. Candice Peters, Assistant Professor of Student Affairs Administration

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Housed within the Department of Counseling, Family Therapy, & Higher Education (CTH), the mission of the Student Affairs Administration Program (MA) at Appalachian State University is to prepare reflective scholar-practitioners to work in various areas of student affairs and serve students and institutions of higher education through collaborative,
equitable and inclusive practice.

THE POSITION–RESEARCH
The GA will provide research support for Dr. Peters, whose scholarship is grounded in critical and intersectional frameworks, highlighting the nuanced realities of systemically oppressed and institutionally excluded populations. The GA will also have an opportunity/opportunities to contribute to research articles and be named as an author on the paper(s).

Current projects include:

  • Using Art in teaching and research.
  • Niceness culture in the academy
  • Relationships/Dynamics among Black women faculty in the academy.

Possible research responsibilities include:

  • Complete and maintain CITI certification requirements (if applicable);
  • Assist in drafting Institutional Review Board applications for Ethics in Human Research;
  • Assist in drafting proposals for conference papers;
  • Engage in academic literature searches for research projects;
  • Draft well-written literature reviews;
  • Support data collection and/or analysis efforts across research projects;
  • Additional opportunities to develop/pursue new research projects, based on experience and shared interests, may emerge.

THE POSITION–ADMINISTRATION & COMMUNICATION
The GA will be required to meet bi-weekly (or as needed) with the supervisor, via Zoom, and check emails at least once per day on weekdays. Additionally, the GA will be expected to perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a full-time graduate student at Appalachian State University;
  • Enrolled in a Boone campus (in-person) graduate program;
  • Ability to work 10 hours per week to fulfill position responsibilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS

  • Proactive communicator and strong written communication skills;
  • Familiarity with academic research (qualitative and/or mixed methods);
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently on assigned projects;
  • Highly organized and ability to effectively manage time;
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in social sciences (e.g., education, psychology, social work, sociology).

POSITION DETAILS AND BENEFITS

  • Start Date: January 16, 2024;
  • 10 hours per week during the spring semester, excluding spring break
