The Student Success & Engagement Graduate Assistant works closely with the James Center staff towards the mission to serve, recruit, advise, and retain
teacher education majors during their tenure at Appalachian State. The GA will take an active role in student engagement, programming, data collection,
and program support for the North Carolina Teaching Fellows and Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES).
This is a 9-month position, working 20 flexible office hours per week in the James Center with some evening and weekend event requirements. Pay is $16.50
per hour ($9,900 for the academic year).

Core Responsibilities
Student Support, Advising & Mentoring
- Provide academic advising to an assigned student caseload and maintain a regular drop-in advising schedule.
- Serve as a support contact for students seeking guidance on teacher education requirements, campus resources, and program expectations.
- Lead mentoring initiatives for the Teaching Fellows (TF), including leading monthly Mentor Committee meetings and serving as a liaison between the committee and TF Coordinator.
Recruitment, Retention & Programming
- Assist with Reich College of Education (RCOE) recruitment efforts, including virtual sessions, information meetings, outreach, etc.
- Plan and implement retention initiatives for first- and second-year education majors.
- Communicate with University Housing and work closely with ACES students in the Residential Learning Community to develop programming and build a cohesive community.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of professional development opportunities, workshops, and activities for ACES, NCTF, and the James Center.
- Supervise the Appalachian Educators Club committees to plan outreach visits and engagement opportunities.
- Manage and execute a small programming budget.
Supervisory & Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of Education Peer Ambassadors (James Center student workers).
- Provide staff coverage and supervision of the James Center student space and help desk as needed.
- Develop and manage social media, create promotional materials (flyers, graphics), and draft weekly newsletters for ACES and Teaching Fellows students.
- Maintain accurate records of program requirements and student databases using Google Workspace tools.
- Obtain training and approval to drive vehicles from the university motor pool to assist with trip logistics and chaperoning.
- Serve on RCOE scholarship scoring and ACES selection committees.
- Meet with the designated supervisor on a regular basis and participate in all necessary staff meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications and Skills
- Must be an Appalachian State student pursuing a graduate degree, preferably in the Reich College of Education. Preferred program: Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA)
- Experience in helping roles (peer mentoring, tutoring, etc.)
- Evidence of leadership experience
- Detail-oriented, organized and innovative.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
