Graduate Assistant Position Description: Leadership Studies Minor + Program A Partnership between the Office of Community-Engaged Leadership and the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling

The Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling (HPC) is a diverse and collaborative community whose primary mission is to train skilled professionals using a theory-to-practice model in Student Affairs, School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Marriage and Family Therapy. We have rigorous programs that adhere to best practice standards with a focus on social justice and inclusion, reflexive practice, critical thinking, and engagement. We accomplish this through an emphasis on holistic and person-centered approaches.

As a part of the College of Education's HPC department and in partnership with the Office of Community-Engaged Leadership, the Leadership Studies Program offers a range of undergraduate courses and a Minor in Leadership Studies.

The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership (CEL) engages Appalachian State University students in academic, experiential, and community-oriented programs that enhance their capacity to serve and lead in socially-responsible ways for the benefit of their local and global communities. THE POSITION:

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership Studies will focus on advising, administration, and promotion in an undergraduate academic program. In this role, one will be able to develop their skills in providing academic support
and guidance, project management and organization, and written and verbal communication. Graduate Assistant roles are designed to promote intentional professional and personal growth and complement academic study.

This position will report to the Associate Director for Community-Engaged Leadership and Director of the Leadership Studies Minor, join a dynamic team of 6 full-time and 6 graduate student staff, and work closely with passionate colleagues across campus. GA positions are designed to promote intentional professional and personal growth and to complement your academic study through concrete opportunities to apply theory to practice.

YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

advising + student development

  • Organizing and delivering individual and group advising sessions to students pursuing the Leadership Studies Minor
  • Developing tools for students to track their progress towards the minor

communication

  • Responding to inquiries about courses and the minor
  • Maintaining the Leadership Studies Minor website
  • Creating and disseminating promotional materials for courses and minor
  • Designing and writing content for informational emails to students in the minor
  • Representing the Leadership Studies Program as needed at presentations and other events

administration

  • Maintaining records and reporting on current students pursuing the minor and those graduating each semester
  • Planning and organizing logistics for graduate receptions and senior recognition each semester
  • Assisting in the processing and tracking of special course forms, approvals, and Degreeworks changes
  • Assisting with other projects as needed (i.e. Study Abroad Proposals, AP&P Proposals)
  • Opportunity to attend and assist with departmental and divisional initiatives as needed
  • Organizing Google Drive and Program Manual content

course + instructor support

  • Assisting with preparation of course materials including slides, readings, and AsULearn pages
  • Updating adjunct instructor resources
  • Opportunity to serve as a Teaching Assistant for a course(s), based on interest and experience

YOU SHOULD APPLY IF YOU:

  • Are accepted as a full-time graduate student at Appalachian State University in the HPC department
  • Have experience and interest in leadership studies and undergraduate education
  • Can show evidence of strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Have demonstrated commitment to inclusion, personal growth, and socially responsible leadership
  • Have the ability to take initiative and work independently on assigned projects
  • Maintain flexibility in your schedule and have 20 hours per week to fulfill position responsibilities

POSITION DETAILS AND BENEFITS:

  • Start Date: August 7, 2023
  • 20 hours per week during academic year (August-May)
  • Opportunity to renew for a 2nd year
