Position Title: Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement
Office: James Center for Student Success & Advising
Reports to: Assistant Director for Student Engagement
Date: August-December 2023; January-May 2024 (if applicable)
Hours and Compensation: 20 hours/week, $15.83/hour

Primary Purpose: This Graduate Assistant (GA) position for the James Center for Student Success & Advising works towards the mission to recruit, advise, provide professional development, and retain teacher education majors during their tenure at Appalachian State to ensure success for a career in education. The James Center staff members are collectively responsible for programs and services that foster community, student success, and inclusive excellence. This is a 5-10 month position requiring 20 hours per week. The Graduate Assistant is primarily responsible for supporting student engagement, programming, data collection, and the marketing of residential learning communities (RLCs) as well as student events and programs sponsored by the James Center for Student Success & Advising.

You'll Be Responsible For:

Administration and Communication

  • Meet weekly with supervisor
  • Maintain record of program requirements and student database

Student Engagement

  • Support ACES program students through direct events
  • Supervise Appalachian Educator's Club committees for engagement opportunities
  • Assist ACES Program Director in developing programs, events, and activities
  • Support James Center events as needed

Internal and External Communications

  • Develop and maintain social media for the ACES program
  • Draft weekly newsletters for ACES students
  • Support App Ed Club in student communication

General

  • Provide staff supervision and coverage of James Center student space as necessary
  • Keep regular schedule of 20 office hours per week
  • Maintain flexibility with work schedule (including day, evening, and weekend events based around class schedule)
  • Engage in team and staff meetings as appropriate
