TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Overview

The mission of TRIO Student Support Services is to graduate our diverse group of low-income, first-generation college students from Appalachian State University. Position Overview

The Transitions Mentor works with SSS students pursuing graduate school, connects them to campus resources, and assists them in researching graduate programs, financial aid assistance, and coordinates campus visits to graduate programs within the region. Additionally, they will meet weekly with a handful of first year and continuing SSS students, mentoring them as they transition into college. Overall, this 10-hour a week position consists of 7-8 hours of mentoring per week (30 min-1 hour meetings) with an additional 2-3 hours for note taking, workshop planning, trip coordinating, and supervision. Our program goals are to connect mentees to campus resources and document actual visits to resources that will promote career readiness and/or graduate school: Library, Writing Center, Career Development Center, Financial Aid, graduate schools, etc.

The ideal candidate will take initiative and have strong organization and time management skills. They will be able to work autonomously within a team as a professional staff member. They will possess strong communication skills and a genuine desire to help this specific student population. They can be a resource for other mentors within the program which includes, but is not limited to the following activities:

  • creating materials for students pursuing graduate school
  • planning, organizing, and implementing a campus visit to a regional graduate school program
  • coordinating a graduate school session with the Appalachian Graduate School Advisor
  • planning a workshop series focused on the steps involved in pursuing a graduate school program
  • getting juniors/seniors involved in career development resources as they prepare to enter the workforce

Position pays ~$16.67/hr ($5000/semester) and runs August 2023-May 2024
